Choosing The Right Furniture For A Modern Dining Room
Dining rooms are generally thought of as formal rooms. As such, most people decorate them in a more traditional style. But it does not have to be this way. If you prefer a more modern look, you can absolutely choose modern furniture and decor for your dining room. However, with the abundance of traditional furniture that seems to overshadow more modern pieces, you'll want to follow these tips for furnishing your dining room in a more modern way.
1. Don't worry about matching the wood.
Back in the day, your grandparents probably stressed over making sure each piece of wood furniture they bought was the same color and had the same finish. This is no longer a priority with modern decorating. It's completely okay to have light-colored dining room chairs and a darker table. In fact, a room furnished in this way will instantly look more modern.
2. Stay away from anything tooled.
Wood that is tooled with ornate patterns has a very old-fashioned look. For a modern dining room, you want wood with either a smooth finish or a distressed and rustic finish. Anything carved will instantly make your dining room look too traditional.
3. If you buy padded furniture, look for a smooth fabric.
Dining room chairs with padded seats can look modern, but only if you choose a fabric that has a smooth, sleek finish. Stay away from velvet as this instantly makes your furniture appear older. Also stay away from canvas, as it has too much texture for a modern room.
4. Pick lighter colors.
Dark colors look very formal, and they also make a room look smaller. Modern decoration is all about making a room look open and spacious. You can do this by choosing lighter colors. You don't have to choose only neutral colors, though. A little light blue or light green can really light up your space and make it look more modern.
5. Stick with solids.
Patterns, especially florals, look dated and old-fashioned. When it comes to choosing chair pads and any other soft furniture, stick with solids. Color blocks can look pretty modern, too, if you like a bolder look.
Above all else, as you choose your dining room furniture, remember that it is preferable to mix and match! Over-coordinating is what your grandparents' generation did, and while it worked well for them, it is no longer the style. An eclectic collection of different pieces is a more progressive look.
